Seven years ago, Devin Haney began his career by traveling down to a pool hall in Tijuana and fighting a Mexican fighter by the name of Gonzalo Lopez Rodriguez. In one round, the Oakland native fighter stopped Rodriguez and began his march toward a world title. Tonight, he encountered a similar challenge on the world’s biggest stage.
Devin Haney has taken down George Kambosos Jr. in his home country of Australia at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. In front of thousands of screaming fans, Haney won 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110 on all three judges’ scorecards. At 23 years old, the Oakland native is the youngest undisputed lightweight champion of the four-belt era.
With a victory, Devin Haney’s work is not finished. According to multiple reports, Haney is contractually obligated to give Kambosos Jr. a shot to regain his titles in Australia this fall. If he is able to get by Kambosos Jr. a second time, he will complete his contract with Top Rank by taking on another top lightweight. Vasiliy Lomachenko hs emerged as a likely option, but Haney nor Top Rank have confirmed that the fight will take place.
As for Kambosos Jr., he will return to the drawing board after suffering the first defeat of his career. As previously mentioned, Kambosos Jr. has a rematch clause built into his contract and he will likely enact it in the coming weeks.
