Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade has had an interesting run through the super welterweight and middleweight divisions. Despite winning world titles in both weight classes, he has never fought a current or former champion. As he enters the super middleweight division, he hopes to change that. In his first bout at his new weight on a new promotion, Andrade carried his sleek, awkward style to a unanimous decision victory against Demond Nicholson.
During Thursday’s press conference, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade and Demond Nicholson traded a few verbal jabs. Most notably, Nicholson took issue with Andrade’s repeated statements regarding Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez and Caleb Plant.
“You haven’t fought me yet,” Nicholson said.
Nicholson and Andrade brought the fire from the press conference to the ring. While Andrade proved to be the more skilled fighter from the opening bell, the fight was physical and gritty throughout. The two-division champion was able to knock down the two-division champion twice while Nicholson seemingly scored a knockdown early on that the official missed. In the end, all three judges delivered the following scores in favor of Andrade: 100-88, 100-88 and 100-88.
“I felt good, I can definitely tell the weight difference but the speed and combinations and the IQ was the plan today and that’s what we did. The weight (was different),” Andrade said after the fight.
Moving forward, the Rhode Island native has made it clear that he’d like to fight Benavidez, Plant or Charlo later this year. Having moved over to Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime, it appears that those fights would be easier to make from a business standpoint. Still, only time will tell in the unpredictable sport of boxing.
“We’re going to look to see who’s available at 168 pounds. I’m just going to get stronger, sharper and faster too,” he said about his future.
