After only spending one season on a veteran minimum deal with the San Antonio Spurs, David West has now gone from one West super power to another.
West was a target for the Warriors before things got shaken up. Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut ended up signing with Dallas. Leandro Barbosa is in Phoenix, Marreese Speights is with the Clippers, and Festus Ezeli signed with Portland. Golden State’s need for more skilled role players only increased, even after they landed Kevin Durant.
As West describes, it was when Durant made his decision and reached out that sealed the deal for him, via Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News:
“(The Warriors) reached out once we lost to OKC, maybe that night,” West told reporters at Golden State’s media day. “My agent was like, ‘If you’re interested in continuing to play, Golden State wants you.’ He was obviously talking to a few guys and to the coach during the process. Then, when Kevin Durant reached out, he told me he wanted me to come join, so it was a no-brainer.”
West’s intentions when joining the Spurs for the vet minimum is the same as his intentions with Golden State — he wants the chance to compete for a championship.
