Caleb McLaughlin and Idris Elba take center stage in the latest release from Netflix, Concrete Cowboy. McLaughlin plays the role of a young man navigating the streets of north Philadelphia while connecting with his estranged father, played by Elba, through horseback riding.
In the first trailer, Netflix offers a look at McLaughlin’s character, Cole. He is portrayed as a young kid just trying to find a place where he is accepted. Meanwhile, Elba’s character is shown to be a stern, no-nonsense kind of guy who has skeletons in his closet that he rather not face. Along the way, the streaming platform highlights Black cowboy culture not only in Philadelphia, but across the world.
McLaughlin and Elba are not the only stars in this film. Throughout the movie, McLaughlin builds a bond with his cousin, played by Jharrel Jerome. At different points, the two try to use the streets as a way to get enough money to escape the city and never come back. Also, Cliff “Method Man” Smith makes an appearance as the town sheriff who is looking to shut down horseback riding throughout the city.
All in all, the film highlights overlooked portions of Black history while tugging at heartstrings with the story of a bickering father and son trying to make things right. Check out the trailer below before the film hits Netflix on April 2.
