LaMarcus Aldridge will be a free agent this July, and there’s a possibility he won’t remain a Trail Blazer.
There have been reports that Aldridge has been exploring options outside of portland, such as San Antonio and Dallas.
While the Spurs are reportedly Aldridge’s top option outside of Portland for next season, many other teams will surely come calling for the 4-time all-star.
One of these teams could be the Boston Celtics, who, according to A. Sherrod Blakely of CSN Northeast, are looking to acquire not only Aldridge, but his teammate Wesley Matthews as well.
From Blakely:
“My understanding is the Celtics are going to be open to putting together some type of package deal where they would not only bring in LaMarcus Aldridge, they’d also bring in one of his good friends by the name of Wes Matthews.”
The Celtics have no major stars on their roster right now, and that’s something that general manager Danny Ainge wants to change. There are plenty of stars hitting free agency this year, including Kevin Love and Jimmy Butler. There have also been reports that Boston may try to acquire Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins’ via trade.
The Celtics have a one of the best young coaches in the NBA, some strong young talent, and plenty of potential to grow through their slew of draft picks. However, it remains to be seen if that will be enough to tempt big-name players to sign a contract.
After all, if Aldridge does leave the Blazers, the Celtics will be one of many teams competing to sign the power forward. Aldridge probably has better options than Boston, but Boston is a big-time market, and have certainly gotten star players to come their way in the past. We’ll see if Boston can make a splash in free agency.
