On Tuesday, multiple outlets highlighted Marty Walsh’s decision to step away from the Biden administration and become the executive director of the NHL Players’ Association. In his absence, Deputy Labor Secretary Julie Su has emerged as the most likely candidate to fill the position of U.S. Department of Labor Secretary.
It appears that the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is already on board with Su filling Walsh’s position. On Thursday, the political caucus formally endorsed Su for the position.
“Since Deputy Secretary Su’s appointment at the Department of Labor, she has been a trusted partner of the CBC and advocate for underserved communities,” the CBC stated.
“Today, the CBC urges the Biden-Harris Administration to appoint Deputy Secretary Su as the Secretary of Labor, becoming the first Asian American Cabinet Secretary in the Administration’s cabinet.”
The Congressional Black Caucus is not the only organization to endorse Su for the position of U.S. Department of Labor Secretary. The Congressional Asian-Pacific American Caucus
(CAPAC) has also endorsed Su for the position.
“Deputy Secretary Su has dedicated her career to the promotion of workers’ rights and fair labor practices and to advancing equity and opportunities for all workers, including ones from historically underserved communities. She would be a stellar, exceptionally qualified candidate to be Secretary of Labor and would deliver results for American workers and the Biden-Harris Administration immediately upon her confirmation,” CAPAC stated.
Su took on the position of Deputy Labor Secretary back in 2021. Prior to joining the Biden administration in Washington, D.C., she was the Labor Secretary under Governor Gavin Newsom in California. She also led California’s Division of Labor Standards Enforcement under Governor Jerry Brown.
