The Cleveland Cavaliers may have found a replacement for David Griffin. After parting ways with the accomplished general manager, it looks like owner Dan Gilbert is looking for a fresh face.
According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, the Cavs have offered Chauncey Billups a five-year deal to run their front office. Billups has not accepted the offer, yet.
A former player with the Pistons and Nuggets, among others, Billups has shown interest in a front office role before. However, he has no experience in a management or coaching setting. The 40-year-old is looking for his first opportunity in the NBA since retiring in 2014.
Billups would be entering a very difficult first front office job. The Cavaliers still expect to be a Finals team and need an extra boost to get past the Golden State Warriors for their second title.
Most recently, the Cavs have shown interest in trading for Jimmy Butler or Paul George. The former seems unlikely after the forward expressed his desire to stay in Chicago. George, meanwhile, has made it clear that he wants to join the Lakers in 2018.
If Billups accepts the job, he would be thrust head first into trade negotiations as the Cavs attempt to re-stock their team.
