University of Texas Quarterback Casey Thompson is heading out of Austin, Texas after starting 10 games during the 2021-2022 college football season. Thompson began the season as the team’s backup quarterback, but he claimed the starting position after just two games. As the team’s starting quarterback, Casey Thompson threw for 2,113 yards and two dozen touchdowns. Unfortunately, his team’s success didn’t match his personal success.
Steve Sarkisian struggled during his first season as the head coach in Austin. After starting the season with a record of 4-1, the Longhorns dropped five of their last six games. Most notably, the Longhorns lost an overtime showdown against the University of Kansas Jayhawks at home.
Following the team’s final game, Sarkisian said that he would be willing to replace Thompson at quarterback.
“I think we have to open that job back up,” he told ESPN.
Soon thereafter, former five-star recruit Quinn Ewers announced that he would leave the Ohio State Buckeyes and transfer to the University of Texas.
“He’s a heck of a player,” Sarkisian commented.
“He’s a heck of a talent. I think there’s a big sigh of relief for him. I think this is where he kind of wanted to be. Now we start the process of the development of him in our system and with the players around him and see how far we can take it.”
