Carmelo Anthony has a chance to join some rarified air this summer. He could be one of 2 players entering the 2016 Rio Olympics to be awarded a gold medal for the third time in a row, joining LeBron James. They would be the only Team USA Men’s Basketball players to ever win three straight olympic gold medals.
Over the last few months, the other two players that could have won three consecutive gold medals this summer, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, both bowed out of contention for separate reasons. Chris Paul will miss due to an injury to his hand suffered during the playoffs and Kobe Bryant retired, so he elected to step aside and allow younger talent to come in.
With Carmelo and LeBron both still on the fence about their 2016 Rio Olympics future there is no clear reason yet as to what will sway their decision either way. It appears that the ‘Zika virus’, which is running rampant as the newest deadly disease, might be a reason for Carmelo to bow out this summer in Rio De Janeiro.
Following from Bleacher Report.
Would the Zika virus really prevent Melo from going to Rio? Only time will tell but as of right now, that Virus still does not have a cure and some of the conditions in Brazil are less than favorable so it could absolutely be a defining factor not only for Carmelo but Team USA Men’s basketball.
