Currently one of the more hot-button topics in the United States, the issue of gun control reared it’s ugly head once again following the Parkland, Florida high school shooting in February. Athletes everywhere have since voiced their opinions and with a nationwide march against gun violence planned today, Carmelo Anthony decided to take it a step further.
With the “March for Our Lives” movement underway across the country as young people march against gun violence, Anthony showed his admiration for the youth and says he helped bus 4,500 kids from his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland to a nearby march in Washington D.C.
The OKC Thunder forward also called today’s demonstrations a “special moment” and is inspired by the children’s determination towards change. Following from Norman Transcript’s Fred Katz:

With hundreds of thousands of people in the streets today protesting for a better and safer tomorrow, it’s nice to see a figure like Carmelo Anthony give back to his community. Many of those kids who wanted to protest likely wouldn’t have had the opportunity to had it not been for Melo and his contributions in making sure those 80-90 buses travel to the nation’s capital.
NBA players have recently been more involved than ever in social issues and Anthony continued that trend today. Hopefully with a bigger spotlight now more than ever, players will continue to show their support and awareness towards the array of social issues that plague our country today.
