The United States Capitol Police Department has reported that an officer has died after sustaining injuries during the riots on Wednesday. Initial reports suggested that officer Brian D. Sicknick died earlier in the evening. However, the department refuted initial reports before revealing that Sicknick had passed away at approximately 9:30 p.m.
“This tragic loss should remind all of us of the bravery of the law enforcement officers who protected us, our colleagues, Congressional staff, the press corps, and other essential workers yesterday,” Reps. Tim Ryan and Rosa DeLauro said.
“To honor Officer Sicknick’s memory, we must ensure that the mob who attacked the People’s House and those who instigated them are held fully accountable.”
Sicknick’s passing brings the death toll to five and 15 have been hospitalized. More than 50 people have been arrested and the FBI has opened an investigation into the matter.
Sicknick’s family has not yet made a public statement regarding the untimely passing of the Capital police officer. The USCPD has not provided any further details regarding the incident that led to the officer’s injuries.
