In front of an eager crowd in the Big Apple, a new chapter of college football history was written. After an outstanding season, USC Quarterback Caleb Williams won the 2023 Heisman Memorial Trophy.
This year, there were a number of incredible college football stars competing to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy. At the Ohio State University in Colombus, quarterback C.J. Stroud baffled defenses and dazzled audiences around the Big Ten. Through a dozen games, Stroud was able to complete 66.2% of his passes, throw for 37 touchdowns and compile 3,340 passing yards. As amazing as Stroud was, he was not the only veteran quarterback putting together an outstanding resumé. Down south, both Max Duggan of TCU and Stetson Bennett of Georgia captivated college football fans around the nation. Duggan has thrown for 3,321 yards, scored 30 touchdowns and led the Horned Frogs to their first appearance in the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, Bennett was able to top his performance in the 2021-2022 season by throwing for nearly 3,500 yards and 20 touchdowns en route to an SEC title. Despite the fantastic accomplishments of Duggan, Stroud and Bennett, Williams was able to surpass them all.
Last season, the USC Trojans finished a tough Pac-12 season with a record of 4-8. Shortly after the season concluded, the Trojans landed a new head coach by the name of Lincoln Riley. While much was made of Riley’s move from the University of Oklahoma to Los Angeles, the program’s biggest acquisition went by the name of Caleb Williams. Transferring to USC, he made an immediate impact. Throwing for more than 4,000 yards and nearly 40 touchdowns, Williams led his teammates to the Pac-12 Championship. Unfortunately, the Trojans came up short in a three-touchdown loss against the Utah Utes. On the bright side, Williams has one more year of college football left and another shot at glory in 2023.
