The destruction of Hurricane Sandy in areas of Brooklyn will not affect Thursday night’s opening night game between the Nets and the Knicks according to the league who have announced it will proceed as scheduled. The NBA spent yesterday investigating whether a postponement would be necessary after the hurricane swept through causing many roads to flood, and widespread damage to buildings and houses. The Barclays Center remained largely unaffected by damage according to officials.
Getting to the arena may be a problem for fans however, the New York subway system took a battering with many of the tunnels flooding, rendering most of, if not all, of the eleven subway lines to Barclays Arena obsolete. The MTA believes they will have service restored within 4-5 days, but not in time for the opening game.
Public transportation has been pushed as the optimal way to get to the arena because of the traffic congestion around the arena’s location at the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues and because of the lack of available parking near the arena.
