Rex Ryan may be looking to make the move from South Street Seaport to Mile High Stadium. According to Ryan’s colleague, Adam Schefter, the former New York Jets Head Coach is pursuing a defensive coordinator position with the Denver Broncos.
Ryan has nearly 30 years of experience as a coach in the NFL. Most notably, he was to head coach of the New York Jets from 2009 through 2014 and the Buffalo Bills from 2015 through 2016. During his two head coaching stints, he won 48% of his regular season matchups and 66.6% of his postseason outings. Not to mention, he also led the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances. Upon his final head coaching stint, Ryan transitioned to television as an analyst on ESPN.
Ryan’s only known competition for the role is former Denver Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph. After spending two seasons in the NFL as a player, he pivoted to coaching in 1999. His career kicked off in Colorado as a graduate assistant before moving around to Bowling Green in 2004 amid a sexual assault scandal. After one season with Bowling Green, Joseph moved up to the NFL in 2005. Since then, he has coached the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals. Along the way, he was offered one head coaching position in Denver. In two seasons, the Broncos finished with a record of 11-21 and no playoff appearances.
Newly hired Denver Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton has not yet identified who he or the organization is leaning toward to fill the role.
