Godzilla was no match for the X-Men.
The superhero sequel scored the biggest opening this year by hauling in a whopping $111 million over the four-day holiday weekend. ‘Days’ boasts the fifth biggest Memorial Day opening of all time behind movies like ‘Fast & Furious 6’ ($117 million) and its predecessor ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ which made $122.9 million back in 2006. The movie earned another $171.1 million overseas for a worldwide total of $282.1 million. It is Fox’s largest intetrnational opening ever surpassing ‘Avatar’ which earned $164.5 million in 2009.
Despite falling to second with the release of ‘X-Men’, the iconic monster flick ‘Godzilla’ still posted big numbers as the film made $39.6 million. This brings the movie’s domestic total to $156.8 million and pushes past the $300 million mark worldwide.
Debuting in third place is the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore comedy ‘Blended’ which pulled in $18.2 million. This is the lowest debut for the duo’s comedies. It fell just short of ‘The Wedding Singer’ which took in $18.8 million in 1998 and ’50 First Dates’ which opened to the tune of $39.8 million in 2004.
Rounding out the top five this week is ‘Neighbors’ at fourth place with an estimated $17.2 million and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ with $10 million over the four day weekend.
Next week, Disney hopes to take down Wolverine and his gang with the queen of evil ‘Maleficent’.
