It took almost seven months but we finally have a movie that broke the $100 million mark its debut weekend.
Michael Bay’s fourth installment ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ took the top spot at the box office this week with its $100 million gross after opening in 4,233 theaters domestically. The film also took the title of the biggest debut this year, beating out ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ which debuted with $95 million back in April. ‘Age’ preformed well internationally as well, pulling in another $201 million in 37 markets which makes its debut weekend a whopping $301 million. Not bad for a film with a budget of $210 million.
The cop comedy ‘22 Jump Street’ took the runner up place with earning $15.4 million over the weekend. It brings its domestic total to $139.8 million and pushes past ’21 Jump Street’s total of $138.4 million.
‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ is still posting big numbers as the film pulled in an estimated $13.1 million. The animated sequel is behind the pacing of the first film but still has hope to catch up.
After earning the top spot last week, the Kevin Hart comedy ‘Think Like a Man Too’ tumbled down to fourth place taking in $10.4 million.
Rounding out the top 5 is ‘Maleficent’ which earned an estimated $8.2 million and pushes past the $200 million mark domestically. This becomes Angelina Jolie’s highest grossing movie of her career.
Next week is up in the air as the horror flick ‘Deliver Us From Evil’, Melissa McCarthy’s comedy ‘Tammy’ and the children’s movie ‘Earth to Echo’ all hit theaters.
