A possessed spirit board and a depressed journalist share the top spot at the box office this week as ‘Nightcrawler’ & ‘Ouija’ both brought in $10.9 million each according to studio estimates. Its possible one movie may edge out another when more solid numbers filter in.
‘Nightcrawler’ is the only new film to enter the top 10 this week. The thriller about a man thrown into the world of LA crime benefited from excellent reviews and word of mouth.
‘Ouija’ took the crown last week when it debuted with $19.8 million. It was expected to fall to the runner up position but the lack of competition and the Halloween weekend help boost sales. This is Hasbro’s first foray into the movie business and is already proving to be a success. In two weeks, the film has taken in $34 million domestically against a budget of $5 million.
Brad Pitt and his platoon fall to third place in its third week as ‘Fury’ took in another $9.1 million.
‘Gone Girl’ continues its success as the Ben Affleck thriller rakes in another $8.8 million. This brings its domestic total to $136.6 million.
Rounding out the top five is the animated family film ‘The Book of Life’ which made $8.3 million over the holiday weekend.
Next week Christopher Nolan hopes to take on Disney as his space odyssey ‘Interstellar’ will go head to head with the animated action robots of ‘Big Hero 6’ when they hit theaters Friday.
