If the Purge does end up happening, you’ll definitely want genetically mutated apes on your side.
Universal’s ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ was the top earner for a second time at the box office this week. The film took in another $36 million and brings its domestic total to $139 million. If it can hold on for a few more weeks, it will surpass its predecessors entire domestic box office run of $179 million back in 2011.
Don’t count out ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ just yet as the thriller opened to $28.3 million in its debut weekend. It only cost $9 million to make compared to ‘Dawn’s budget of $170 million. Although ‘Anarchy’ had a respectable opening, it is still down from last years ‘The Purge’ which opened to $34 million.
Third place went to the ‘Cars’ spinoff, ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’ which earned $18 million. With little competition from other family movies, ‘Planes’ could prove to be a sleeper box office hit.
‘Sex Tape’ didn’t see the same success as some of Cameron Diaz’s more recent box office victories as the comedy only earned $15 million. Her other film this year ‘The Other Woman’ topped the box office with $24 million back in April. ‘Sex Tape’ cost $40 million to make and still has some time to turn a profit.
Rounding out the top five was ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ which is still holding on with $10 million.
This week will be a mixed bag as the sci-fi thriller flick ‘Lucy’, the romantic comedy ‘And So It Goes’ and the Greek god ‘Hercules’ duke it out for the top of next weeks box office.
