Dwayne Johnson is coming to save the DCEU. Johnson took to Instagram on Thursday to share a new poster and official release date for Black Adam.
And in all fairness, the DCEU doesn’t exactly need saving after the fantastic year it had. Joker became the first ‘R’ rated film to gross over $1 billion at the box office on Friday. Aquaman kicked off the year as the first truly fun DC film and, despite its flaws, is one of the most rewatchable superhero outings of the last few years. Then, Shazam! won over critics and audiences alike by successfully turning its back on the ridiculously grim tone of the studio’s first attempts. But, Johnson’s long-awaited inclusion is the perfect cap to a year that finally saw DC turn their cinematic universe around.
Speaking of, though we know Black Adam is officially coming to theaters in 2021, we don’t know much more about the film than we did last week. In the comics, Black Adam has traditionally been an anti-hero who butts heads with Shazam and the Marvel family we met earlier this year. But, Johnson’s post signals that his rendition of the character may put more emphasis on the ‘hero’ aspect of his anti-hero moniker.
“He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way.
Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way.”
As I said above though, we know nothing about what to expect and Johnson’s quote only muddies the waters even more. But, it’s worth mentioning that the Shazam! sequel is rumored to begin production sometime next summer. It has yet to receive a release date but, that timeline would generally place its release near the end of 2021. So, there’s a chance we’ll see some sort of crossover between Shazam! 2 and Black Adam. But, it’ll likely be a while before we learn more about what both film’s plots will entail.
Until then, check out the new Black Adam poster below:

Black Adam is set to hit theaters on December 22nd, 2021.
