President-Elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Rep. Marcia Fudge as the next Housing and Urban Development Secretary. If confirmed, Fudge would succeed Dr. Ben Carson in January when the Biden administration takes office.
“Certainly, it’s an honor and a privilege to be asked to be in a president’s Cabinet. It is something that probably in my wildest dreams I never would have thought about. And so if I can help this president in any way possible, I’m more than happy to do it. It’s a great honor and a privilege to be a part of something so good,” Fudge told a gaggle of reporters after learning of the possible nomination.
Sources close to the Biden administration have said that Fudge could be nominated because of her “decades of public service and how she has been a leading voice for working families in Congress.” Through her career, Fudge has worked as the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and the former Mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio.
News of Fudge’s potential nomination comes hours after more than 1,000 powerful Black women signed a letter urging the President-Elect to nominate more Black women to his cabinet.
“Just as Black women and Black Americans were key to your election in November, we are key to the success of your Administration and the implementation of your vision. Our community must see ourselves reflected in key leadership positions in recognition of our importance,” the letter stated.
President-Elect Biden has yet to confirm the nomination publicly.
