Beyoncé kicked off the month of December with a surprise single. “My House” debuted on Friday, December 1 as fans flocked to the theaters to watch Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.
“A gift from the queen for the opening weekend of the Renaissance film,” a message from Apple Music reads.
“Listen now to Beyoncé’s new track, ‘My House.'”
Beyoncé is no stranger to surprise releases. In 2013, she delivered her self-titled album without notice. Just a few years later, she partnered with HBO for the surprise debut of Lemonade. Not to mention, she contributed to Frank Ocean’s surprise LP, Blonde, in 2016.
Beyoncé also surprised some film industry insiders. On November 30, the Texas native’s Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé performed “better than expected,” generating $5 million in box office revenue during Thursday previews at AMC locations in North America. As a result, film industry experts expect the film to generate $20 million at the box office during the first weekend of December. If the film performs as expected, it will generate more revenue at the box office during the first weekend of December than any other film premiere since Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai in 2003.
