Becky Hammon has already made waves for being the first female assistant coach in NBA history. She may be shattering another barrier too. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Milwaukee Bucks will interview Hammon for their vacant head coaching position. She would be the first female to interview for a head coaching job in NBA history.
Milwaukee interviewed Hammon for the team’s general manager position last year, despite not having front office experience. Wojnarowski adds that Hammon is not a leading candidate, but the Bucks front office is intrigued enough. The Bucks went through two coaches this year, Jason Kidd and Joe Prunty. Kidd was fired in January, replacing him with Prunty.
WHen given the opportunity, Hammon has looked the part of head coach. She took the reigns of San Antonio’s Summer League team in 2015 and lead them to a championship. If that is not enough, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich believes Hammon is more than ready for a head coaching job. That is some pretty high praise from one of the best coaches the NBA has ever seen.
Milwaukee has a lot of coaching interviews lined up. Aside from Hammon, the Bucks plan to interview former Hornets coach Steve Clifford, former Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, and fellow Spurs assistant Ettore Messina amongst others.
