Barbie is the latest Hollywood production to join the billion-dollar club. According to multiple reports, the Greta Gerwig picture crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office less than three full weeks after its wide release. By doing so, it joins Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the only films of the decade to cross this box office threshold. It also holds the distinction of having the best box office debut weekend of any film this year.
The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-led picture not only performed well at the box office, but it was also received well by critics. Nearly three weeks into its theatrical run, the film has received an approval rating of 88% among critics.
“It’s funny, it’s bright and uplifting, and I think has a lot to say about the modern world – both in terms of feminism and gender equality. Ryan Gosling really goes all-out,” Victoria Luxford of BBC wrote.
“This is absolutely sensational, and anyone who can’t vibe with the sharp, empathetic commentary here has got to grow up. This really is one of the best IP films ever,” Cory Woodroof of USA Today’s For The Win added.
Barbie will continue to perform well at the box office heading into the week. The film reportedly picked up an additional $53 million this weekend.
