Well, it finally happened y’all. Avengers: Endgame is now officially the highest-grossing film of all-time. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige triumphantly made the announcement to kick off the company’s Comic-Con panel on Saturday.
After a record-breaking–no– a record-shattering start, Avengers: Endgame looked poised to blaze past Avatar‘s record. However, the longer the film stayed in theaters, the more it began to plateau. For a minute there, it looked like it would have trouble even coming close to the record. But, thanks to a (slightly) extended re-release and renewed interest due to Spider-Man: Far From Home, Endgame has finally taken its spot as the #1 grossing film of all-time.
Avengers: Endgame currently sits $500k north of Avatar at about $2.79 billion. It will likely receive a solid boost over the next week or so after that INSANE Comic-Con panel. But, for now, it looks like we still have yet to see a film break $3 billion. Maybe the next time the Avengers assemble they’ll be able to pull it off. Or who knows? Maybe James Cameron will take back the crown with one of his Avatar sequels.
Avengers: Endgame releases digitally on July 30th, then on DVD and Blu-Ray on August 13th.
