Twenty-seven years ago, Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos pushed Amazon off the ground. This week, neither of the two will lead the company as the CEO. In the wake of Jeff Bezos stepping down as the CEO, Andy Jassy will assume the company’s top position.
Jassy joined the company shortly after graduating from Harvard Business School in 1997. Six years later, he became the point person for Amazon’s Web Services team. Just five years ago, he moved into the role of AWS CEO. After a 24 year run at the company, he’s ascended to the highest heights of the tech giant.
Bezos will not completely leave the company to Jassy. He will transition from CEO to executive chair.
“He’ll likely still stay involved, though no longer focusing on the day-to-day and instead able to focus on company-wide initiatives and new products and services,” Daniel Elman of Nucleus Research told CNN.
“His skills for cutting through noise identifying high-value opportunities cannot be overstated, so it would make sense for Amazon to free him from the operational grind to maximize those areas.”
