Earlier this year, Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn declared that April 30, 2022 would be the biggest night in women’s boxing. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano fought for 10 electric rounds on that particular night at Madison Square Garden and proved Hearn to be correct. With that said, the events of April 30, 2022 may be topped by what’s scheduled to take place on September 10, 2022. In back-to-back fights, Savannah Marshall will challenge Claressa Shields while Alycia Baumgardner takes on Mikaela Mayer. As fight night nears, the trash talk is piling up. Most recently, Baumgardner chopped it up with Bad Left Hook and made a few predictions about her next fight.
“There is no doubt that I am the biggest pound-for-pound puncher in the women’s game – just ask Christina Linardatou or Terri Harper. Mikaela Mayer is next to find this out firsthand. This fight won’t go past seven rounds,” Baumgardner told the Vox Media affiliate.
Not only does Baumgardner believe that she will stop Mayer within seven rounds, but she also believes that it’s necessary. During her recent interview, the Michigan native said that Mayer needs to be “humbled.”
“She honestly doesn’t know what she’s got herself into fighting me,” Baumgardner continued.
“Everything has been handed to her on a plate throughout her career; she needs to be humbled. Our paths couldn’t have been much different. She’s come up through the Olympic route and has been given every opportunity as a pro without having to fight for it.”
Baumgardner will have to back up her tough talk when she heads into the ring with Mayer on September 10, 2022. Regardless of what happens, one fighter will walk away with a blemish on their professional record.
