Here enters a whole new world as Will Smith grants us the first look at Disney’s live-action Aladdin. The fresh prince took to Instagram this Wednesday to reveal the poster. We get our first look at the lamp that starts the whole adventure with a caption saying, “choose wisely”.
Smith will be taking over the role of the genie. First voiced and brought to life by the late Robin Williams, Smith will have big shoes to fill. Robin made the genie his own and made it what many remember so fondly of when they remember their childhood.
This is not the first or even third live-action remake that Disney has made or planned for. It seems like we are in an age where remakes and reboots are what most studios are doing to garner an easy win. We have seen this happen with live-action remakes like The Jungle Book, Cinderella and Tarzan to name some of the many.
What makes some of these new live-action movies great is the fact that many of them tweak and make the story more original. Thus, rather than being a boring play for play copy we get a fresh take with the added visuals.
Disney’s Aladdin looks to bring this originality to its remake with bringing authenticity and a new story. This take will introduce us to a diverse cast compromised of Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Jasmine) and Will Smith. Additionally, the movie looks to take inspiration from both the animated movie and the quintessential tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
The film will premiere in theaters on May 24th, 2019 in the U.S. and U.K. With the poster out, we shall hopefully be seeing a trailer soon.
