For the first time since the summer of 2014, the threat of LeBron James departing a team following a successful run during a four-year stretch can become a reality. Since re-signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, James has elected to sign shorter contracts for more money while also keeping the Cavs on their toes basically every offseason.
Heading into the summer of 2018, the speculation of James departing hasn’t been this high since his time in South Beach. The rumors of a run to Los Angeles have run rampant but their current cap structure isn’t helping them and their star rookie, Lonzo Ball, has been rather up and down to start his inaugural NBA season. The Lakers neighbor at Staples Center, the LA Clippers, appear to be in a tough situation also this year with another injury-filled roster. Blake Griffin is expected to miss two months, Milos Teodosic hasn’t played since the second game, Patrick Beverley’s season is already done and Danilo Gallinari has already missed over half of his team’s games.
So what other options are out there for James? Why not a trip to Philadelphia to help complete the process?
Following comes from Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today.
If James, who can become a free agent after this season, decides to leave the Cavaliers, he could – and should – consider the 76ers, and executives around the league believe Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo will attempt to sign James.
