It’s My Turn When you think of playing games, you might think of kids on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Games such as Fish, Chutes and Ladders and Memory also teach children the values that they will need later on in life. Games help us grow mentally and physically. Everyone in life plays games, whether you realize it or not. It is in your best interest as an adult to at least have a little knowledge of how to play certain games.
1. Solitaire: There are hundreds of variations of this game. This game is valuable for children to learn numbering, sequencing, and strategy. It is a game that is usually played solo. It’s a great way to pass the time when you are “bored.” There are also some variations of the game that can be played with other people. The only equipment that is needed is a deck of card and a place to spread them out.
2. Chess: Chess is a game for all age levels. You don’t need someone of your own age to play against. You also don’t have to be athletically inclined to play the game of chess. Chess improves memory as you begin to recognize different opening moves and can act accordingly. Chess also improves your concentration because there is only one goal; to checkmate your opponent. This comes in very handy as you study for college exams or have a goal to meet at work. This game also gives the player a sense of independence. Your moves and responses to your opponents’ moves give you the ability to use your own judgment. While playing, your mind uses the scientific principle of predicting your opponent’s move. It allows you the luxury of playing the what-if theory in your brain before you make the next move.
3. Pool: When people hear of the game of Pool, they think of seedy barrooms and tobacco smoke. However, Pool is a game that instructs you to control your body. It helps you use not only your physical skills but your mental skills and complex geometric calculations. You can imagine situations and see them come to fruition on the Pool table. Pool is a social game, usually, where you learn patience. You may want to hit the ball as hard as possible or grip the cue with all of your strength, but this will not give you the desired result. Pool is known in almost every country and can be played by any age group. Learning the calculations of the hitting the ball in the right spot will help an adult weigh options in their workplace.
4. Monopoly: This game is a game of chance but also one of strategy. You learn skills of buying and selling property and borrowing money. You take chances on which property you can gather the most profit from owning. This game can be long so that it might take a few sessions of play to see who won or lost. Fortunes come and go and the player with the right moves will win the game.
5. Poker: Poker is another strategy game with some chance of obtaining the right cards thrown in. You learn the basics of gambling the right amount of money while calculating
the odds of winning the hand. There are numerous variations of this game but the result is the same; having the best hand. Games are played throughout the world. They are great socializing events where the winner is not known until the game is over. Games start out as a child’s plaything but end up being a lifelong lesson
