Just one day after tearing his Achilles tendon Jimmy Smith has been suspended by the league for performance enhancing drug use. Although Smith has the option to appeal, he will begin to serve the suspension immediately while injured.
Ravens’ CB Jimmy Smith is being suspended four games for violating NFL policy of performance enhancing substances, per source.
Now that Smith is out for the year with a torn Achilles, he will withdraw his appeal and begin serving suspension, per source.

Had Smith chosen to pursue an appeal he would have missed the remainder of this season due to injury and time next season for the suspension depending on the outcome of his appeal. Now it is possible his torn Achilles lingers at the beginning of next season, but by not appealing the suspension the only time Smith will miss is whatever time it takes him to heal.
