Hodskins’ parents always treated their son as a normal child despite the birth trauma – Zach does not have his left hand to the elbow. In the womb, the baby had a triple cord around the neck and he kept his hand wrong all nine months. This caused a bad blood flow to the hand, and it developed incorrectly. “Zach was two years old when I presented him with a miniature basketball shield. Since then, every morning first thing he did is running to his favorite toy and making a slam dunk, “- said the father of the athlete, Bob Hodskins.
He grew up in a sports family: Hodskins’ father played for the baseball team of the college, the mother was professionally engaged in swimming, and the older sister was in the school basketball team. In the childhood, Zach tried many sports besides basketball – for example, in the third grade, a boy was carried away with skimboarding. Much later, Hodskins tried himself in triathlon and mountain bike.
“If the son could manage himself, he never asked for help,” his mother Stephanie admired. “To make it easier for Zach, I bought shoes without laces, but he said it was wrong and he learned to tie them with the one hand.” When the guy switched to basketball, he often heard behind his back something like “This one-armed guy chose a wrong sport,” but this couldn’t stop him.
Many hours of training helped Zach to become one of the leaders of the basketball team. People often asked him about the hand, and Hodskins thought up a story that he was surfing and attacked by a shark. Parents saw how his son was struggling, and they explained to Zach he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone, but he did not listen and dreamed of a professional career. The family hired two coaches for him. A major role in the development of Zach’s career was played by scouting service ScoutsFocus, which is engaged in the search for talents in the USA for the NCAA (National Association of Student Sport).
When Zach turned 15, his family moved from Charleston to Milton – to play for one of the strongest schools in the state of Georgia. In Milton, Hodgkins won the Georgia State Championship twice in four seasons and in 2015 he received two offers from NCAA student teams. In Kentucky, he was offered a sports scholarship, but Zach went to the University of Florida.
“I am grateful to God. He wanted me to fall in love with basketball and go through the difficult way. I have no other secret except that I never gave up, “Zach admitted. After Hodskins scored the first points for the “Florida”, he was congratulated by the legendary player Michael Jordan.
Zack visits people with disabilities often and participates in various social programs. “It’s incredible how many people went through the same thing as I am, including skepticism and disrespect. I’m always happy to help. I like to communicate with children very much. I tell them that it’s important to be natural. Otherwise, it’s impossible to love yourself,” Zach says. He is thinking seriously about the path of the coach-motivator after the basketball career.
In childhood, the one guy told Zach that it would be easier for him to win the presidential election in the US than to make a career in sports. It is interesting how this troll would react if someday America will be ruled by a one-armed basketball player?
