Last week, Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Héctor Luis García competed for the WBA “Regular” Lightweight Championship. Next month, it appears that Leigh Wood and Mauricio Lara will compete for the WBA’s featherweight title.
On Monday, Matchroom Boxing revealed that Lara and Wood will fight for the WBA Featherweight Championship. The bout has been set for February 18, 2023 in Nottingham, England at Motorpoint Arena.
“Mauricio Lara has made things personal between us with the disrespect he showed me regarding my injury and my country. I’m going to show him what I’m all about. See you on February 18 Nottingham – And Still,” WBA Featherweight Champion Leigh Wood said.
Wood is currently riding a three-fight win streak after suffering a majority decision loss at the hands of James Dickens. In his last outing, he overcame a first-round knockdown to stop Michael Conlan in the 12th and final round.
“I have been waiting for this opportunity for 2 years and I am not going to waste it,” Mauricio Lara said.
“In February 2021 I beat Warrington in England, now in 2023 I will do the same with Wood. The WBA 126lbs World Title goes to Mexico, that I promised to my daughter, my family, my team and to my whole country. Your time has come Leigh Wood, no “injury” can save you now from this.”
Wood’s opponent, Mauricio Lara, is a hard-hitting puncher from Mexico City, Mexico. Lara lost his first pro fight by split decision and has amassed a record of 25-1-1 since then. More recently, nine of his last ten victories have come inside of the distance.
