Over half of the NBA’s teams have ownership of a team in the D-League, and the Wizards could be one of the next to have a D-League team of their own. The D-League serves a great tool for teams to send players to so they can get more reps and time in the system before moving up to the NBA.
Wizards’ owner, Ted Leonsis, wants to bring a D-League team to the nation’s capital, and will likely lead the push to get Washington an affiliate. Instead of sharing a team with other NBA teams, the Wizards could have their own affiliate to work with and send players to.
“I’d like one day to bring a D-League team to our community as well.”
Something like this would have highly benefitted the Wizards in the 2013-14 season, where they could have sent Otto Porter down so he could learn the system and have more opportunities rather than sitting and watching from the sidelines. If Leonsis gets his wish and a D-League team is brought to DC, the Wizards could highly benefit from having more players in the system.
