As the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop culture, it is important to take a closer look at the cities, states and regions that have made a profound impact on the culture. At first glance, it is easy to point out cities like Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Chicago as key centers of the culture over the years. However, it is just as important to give flowers to the areas of the U.S. that are often overlooked. Most notably, take a look at the state of Virginia. From the music Pharrell has produced to the way Allen Iverson’s style and bold nature captured the attention of millions around the world, there is no denying what Virginia means to Hip-Hop culture. Looking ahead, let’s dive into who and what is shaping the path forward for the state.
Virginia’s own Who? is helping set the tone for the state moving forward. Following the success of “Da Memo” with Chaz French, he has tapped in with Nat to deliver a new track called “Dale Wepa.” Trading verses over an uptempo beat that brings together Reggaton, drill and trap for, Who? and Nat shine in a 79-second lyrical showcase.
“When I sat down to make this record I knew I wanted to make something that was for my culture. I wanted to find a way to mix Reggaeton and Trap Music, but also add Bachata to it. I took all the elements I like from each of those genres and ended up making something unique without sounding like anything I’ve heard before,” Who? said about “Dale Wepa.”
In about two weeks, fans from around the world will descend upon Virginia Beach for Pharrell’s Something In The Water. While there, be sure to get a taste of the music that the rising artists out of the area are making because it’s never too early to be up on who’s got next. Check out the Fargo-directed visual below.
