Want to Become a Music Industry Executive? Here’s What You Need To Do

MUSIC
FOTEROS

Working as a music business executive can sound glamorous at first, and there are parts of the job that can be. But it can also be tough, and music industry executives need to be much more than passionate about the business and have a good eye for talent. They have to be familiar with everything from law, to marketing, to finance if they want to succeed. Let’s take a look at what you need to do to become a music executive.

Get the Right Credentials

There aren’t many programs in the country that provide adequate training specifically for music executives. Your best bet would be to at least get a bachelor’s in business. Note that this is something you can do online if that’s more convenient for you. You could check out the Merrimack College bachelor completion program online which allows you to get your degree online and part-time. So, you’ll still be able to generate an income while getting your credentials.

Start from the Ground Up

The next thing you’ll need to do is look for entry level positions in the field. This is one of the most common ways for execs to get their foot in the door. Know that many internships aren’t paid, but they are still worth it. They will give you the opportunity to learn new things and make valuable connections. You could also land a position as an executive assistant, but know that this can be a pretty fast-paced and stressful job.

Get Experience

You also need to get some experience so you can beef up your resume. Try to work with as many seasoned executives as you can. You’ll then start to learn how to promote new acts, speak with artists, or spot good investments. You also shouldn’t be afraid to take jobs you feel may be beneath you.

Get Some Additional Training

Once you start climbing the ranks and make a name for yourself, you should consider continuing your education. You could transition into law, for instance, to get a better understanding of contracts and the legal side of the business. You could take specialized certificates revolving around the music industry as well. You have courses that will teach you about things like artist management, music acquisitions, or production process strategies among other things.

Executives should focus on growing their knowledge of things like global music management, music licensing, tour management, and public relations. The more well-rounded you are, the more efficient you’ll be as an executive and you’ll be more involved in the label’s processes. Some may even decide to go into IT so they can work with streaming services. Education is what will allow you to pivot if there’s disruption and will also make you more respected as an executive in the industry.

So, if you want to become a music executive, you have to be ready to put in the work. It all starts with the right foundation and doing the groundwork necessary.
