At the moment, Jermell Charlo sits atop the super welterweight division with all four belts and an undetermined date set with Tim Tsyzu. Not far off, the likes of Sebastian Fundora, Tony Harrison, Erickson Lubin and others fight for a shot at the division’s king. A bit further down, a young fighter is rising through the ranks en route to a potential shot at the title in the future. Hailing from Roseland, New Jersey, his name is Vito Mielnicki Jr.
On Saturday, Vito Mielnicki Jr. carried his 13-1 record down to the nation’s capital for a date with Omar Rosales out of Houston, Texas. At 20 years old, Vito Mielnicki Jr. has a few things to improve upon, but his power is not one of them. From the opening bell, Rosales felt the power of Mielnicki Jr.’s right hand and the New Jersey native did not let up. The super welterweight prospect put Rosales down at the end of the third round and followed it up with a fourth-round barrage of power shots that forced the referee to stop the fight.
Following the fight, Mielnicki Jr. celebrated with his team and earned the approval of WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. With eleven months left in the year, the sky is the limit for the young fighter’s campaign.
