Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis has elected to stand in solidarity with members of SAG-AFTRA and not participate in the ongoing production of G20. MRC, the production company behind the film, was given a waiver by SAG-AFTRA, but Davis says that she’d rather “stand in solidarity with actors” during the ongoing strike.
“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike. I appreciate that the producers [of] the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA,” she told Deadline.
G20, an action-thriller in which Davis would star as fictional President Taylor Sutton, is one of many projects to receive a waiver from SAG-AFTRA during the strike. The decision to give some projects waivers to continue production has caused a bit of confusion, but the union’s leadership believes it is in their best interest to do so.
“We believe the leverage created by increasing competitive pressure on the AMPTP and denying them what they want most will force them back to the table and help bring this strike to an end,” a statement from SAG-AFTRA reads.
