Over the summer, the Oklahoma City Thunder roster had a complete makeover. They lost the star of their franchise when Kevin Durant departed for the Golden State Warriors. But before KD’s defection, another member of what was supposed to be the Thunder’s ‘core four’ was traded out of town.
Serge Ibaka was sent to the Orlando Magic during a draft day trade. The defensive stretch-four went to the Magic with high hopes and an understanding of the business that is the NBA. He got traded because he overstayed his welcome with the Thunder and regardless of Durant’s decision, the Thunder were going to deal him either way.
Ibaka’s return to Oklahoma City wasn’t expected to be one of the most anticipated matchups of the season but it turned to be a must watch.
Serge Ibaka and his former teammate Russell Westbrook dueled in different ways. Serge made his mark by scoring a career-high 31 points, shooting 13-19 from the field and he also grabbed nine rebounds on the night. Westbrook had an explosive night of his own, putting up a triple-double.
Russ’ triple-double effort came up short thanks to a big game-winner from Serge Ibaka.
After the game, Ibaka spoke to the media and talked about how good he felt with the result.
