Russ Smith has not yet found his footing in the NBA, but the point guard is doing quite well in the D-League. Playing for the Delaware 87ers, the former Memphis Grizzlies backup guard scored a monstrous 65 points, on Wednesday. He shot 24-42 from the field and 16-20 from the free throw line during his record-setting night against the Canton Charge.
Smith is now averaging 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game in the D-League.
Russ played for the Grizzlies early this season before being waived to clear a roster spot for Ryan Hollins. In short, injuries to Grizzlies’ big-men, including Marc Gasol, did the former Louisville Cardinal in in his quest to make an impact in the NBA.
Nevertheless, performances like this prove he can be at least a solid contributor in the NBA and it will not be long before another team signs him to at least a 10-day contract to see what he can do against better competition.
For now, Smith can be pleased with an incredible scoring display that saw him set a new record in the D-League. Soon, he may be trying to put on similar shows in the NBA, looking for just one chance to make his mark.
