Wrestlemaina 31. The grandest stage of them all. The biggest stage for all of the WWE is in its 31st year.
This year ‘Mania was held in the brand new ‘Levi’s Stadium’, the home of the San Fransisco 49ers. Over 75,000 people were in attendance for this historic event and it didn’t disappoint.
The pageantry came to a nostalgic point during Wrestlemania 31 when the match between ‘The Game’, Triple H and ‘The Vigilante’, Sting faced off. It also happened to be Sting’s first ever appearance in a Wrestlemania and in a match in the WWE.
So if you enjoyed wrestling in the 90’s and 2000’s, this was pretty awesome.
Oh but there’s more. Two factions that defined each company made surprise returns to help their respective company star.
Triple H’s match with Sting was billed as the WWE’s final blow in the war against WCW (even though the WWE has actually owned the WCW since 2000). Sting was ‘dominating’ Triple H for most of the match and Triple H was placed in Sting’s signature submission move, the Scorpion Deathlock. Then out of no where D-Generation X, including the ‘Bad Ass’ Billy Gunn, The Road Dogg and X-Pac came running down the ramp to help.
DX were all taken out by Sting as they stood on the apron but the distraction gave Triple H time to recover and retrieve his signature sledgehammer. So you would think that’s all, right?
Wrong.
Seconds later, The nWo arrived. Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash came down to the ring. ‘Hollywood Hulk Hogan’ took the sledgehammer from Triple H’s grasp, while Scott Hall and Kevin Nash clashed with DX around the ring, turning Sting vs. Triple H into a lumberjack match between buddies, oddly enough.
Sting and Triple H eventually got back at it but then as Sting went to lock his submission, the final main member of DX popped up.
Shawn Michaels, Mr. Wrestlemania, HBK came out decked out in DX gear. He hit his signature superkick ‘Sweet Chin Music’ on Sting, saving Triple H.
The Game eventually knocked out Sting with the top of the sledgehammer and pinned the WCW legend to win the match, but after the bell rang nWo and DX took the ring peacefully. Triple H offered Sting a handshake and Sting so obliged to shake the legendary performers hand, ending this chapter and giving the WWE a final victory over the WCW.
