The Recording Academy has presented Victoria Monét with the Best New Artist award at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Monét joins an exclusive collection of Best New Artist recipients that includes Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. It is also her first victory during the televised portion of the GRAMMY Awards.
Monét may have received the Best New Artist award, but her journey to the stage has not been easy or quick. Before the world came to know her solo work, she worked as a songwriter, contributing to the work of Brandy, Ariana Grande and Chris Brown. Then, she spent another decade releasing EPs and singles building to her debut album, Jaguar II. The success of tracks like “How Does It Make You Feel” and “On My Mama” coupled with a spirited fan base and co-signs from legendary acts propelled her into a new light.
Tonight, her 15-year-long journey hit its crescendo. In addition to the Best New Artist award, she has also won Best R&B Album and earned nominations for Best Traditional R&B Performance, Record of the Year and Best R&B Song among others.
