If you were preoccupied with the Oscars last night, then you missed the Justice For Flint event. The benefit was held by Creed director Ryan Coogler, and was geared to raise money for the people suffering from the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. The event was livestreamed via Revolt and featured celebrities Jesse Williams, Ava DuVernay, Janelle Monae, Hannibal Buress, and others.
One of the standout acts was Vic Mensa. The Roc Nation signee debuted a teaser of his new song “16 Shots.” The record is a tribute to Laquan McDonald — the 17-year-old that was shot 16 times by officer Jason Van Dyke in Chicago back in 2014. The passion and pain felt in Mensa’s voice as he introduced the song is powerful; then you hear the lyrics and the raw emotions jump out, which makes the performance touching. It leaves you wanting more.
