Vernon Carey Jr., who most recruiting experts view as a top three player, has committed to Duke. Carey Jr. is known as the second best big man in the class just behind Memphis commit James Wiseman. Carey Jr. was considering Michigan State and Duke as his top two choices. Outside of Wiseman, no other big in this class has the talent, upside, and ability that Carey Jr. does.
Both Wiseman and Carey Jr. are lefties but with much different games. Carey Jr. is much thicker and uses his body to craft space down low opposed to Wideman’s wiry athletic frame. He isn’t quite the electrifying athlete most one and done players are nowadays but his game has few holes with the ability to score from not just the paint but outside as well.
With Carey Jr. choosing Duke it is yet another top three recruit for Coach K and makes it his fifth top-three recruit in the last three classes. Duke has taken over as the premier recruiting school in the country evidenced by them landing all three top recruits in the 2018 class.
Carey Jr. will join Wendell Moore as Duke’s other five star in this class, not too mention four-star recruit Boogie Ellis. After landing yet another top recruit Duke will be more than reloaded after their current star-studded class departs.
