The welterweight division is about to get a bit more interesting as two undefeated fighters make plans to share the ring later this year. As reported by Mike Coppinger of ESPN, Vergil Ortiz Jr. will fight Eimantas Stanionis on March 18, 2023 in Dallas, Texas. It is unclear what venue will host the event, but it has been confirmed that the bout will air live on DAZN this spring.
Eimaantas Stanionis enters the bout with an unblemished record of 14-0, including nine knockouts. In his last outing, he handed Radzhab Butaev of Russia the first loss of his pro career. Despite his strong resumé, Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s trainer, Robert Garcia, does not believe that he’ll have enough to hand the Texas native the first loss of his pro career.
“Stanionis is a great fighter but Vergil is just something else,” Garcia told ESNews.
“Vergil is just one of those kids that’s not only very good in boxing but mentally and physically – unstoppable, unbeatable.”
Vergil Ortiz Jr. has proved to be difficult to beat thus far in his career. Like Stanionis, Ortiz Jr. boasts an undefeated record of 19-0. Furthermore, all 19 of his victories have come by way of knockout. Unfortunately, medical setbacks and other challenges have prevented him from being active in the ring. Since July 2020, he has only fought three times.
