Former President Donald Trump will head back to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2024, but he won’t be making his way along the campaign trail. Instead, he will find himself sitting alongside his legal representatives in a federal courtroom.
In the nation’s capital, the former President is facing several charges regarding his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the most recent presidential election. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has elected to begin jury selection in the forthcoming trial on March 4, 2024.
Chutkan’s decision pushes the trial closer to the date desired by the prosecution. The office of special counsel Jack Smith has pushed for the trial to begin on January 2, 2024 while Trump’s attorneys had asked for the trial to begin in 2026.
“These proposals are very far apart and for reasons I’ll get into shortly none of them is acceptable,” Chutkan said on Monday, August 28.
“While Mr. Trump has the right to prepare, the public has a right to [the] prompt and efficient resolution of this matter.”
For the former reality show host, this is his second scheduled trial of 2024. Two months earlier, he will stand trial in a defamation case in New York. He is also set to stand trial for election interference charges in Georgia and hush money payments in New York.
