The White House announced a temporary halt on federal grants and loans, effective Tuesday, as the Trump administration initiates a comprehensive review of government spending. According to a memo from the White House budget office, federal assistance—including support for nonprofits, universities, small businesses, and state and local governments—must be frozen by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
It further states, “The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve.”
The memo instructs federal agencies to review how well they’re following President Trump’s executive orders focusing on areas like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), “woke” gender ideology, and the Green New Deal.
However, it doesn’t specify what these policies will entail, which is particularly notable since the Green New Deal was never enacted into law.
The memo also makes it clear that the pause won’t affect Social Security or Medicare benefits and doesn’t apply to assistance that goes directly to individuals.
