After spending months away from social media, Kendrick Lamar returned to offer an important message to the world of music. Having delivered classics like Section .80 and To Pimp A Butterfly through Top Dawg Entertainment, Kendrick Lamar has announced that he will be parting ways with the imprint after he releases his next album.
“While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next. As I produce my final TDE album, I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood. May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators,” Lamar wrote.
Shortly after the announcement was made, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith offered a statement of his own. Tiffith offered his “full support” as he makes the next step in his legendary career.
“With this being Dot’s last album on TDE, this is more of a VICTORY LAP, a celebration,” Tiffith wrote.
“I know he will be successful in whatever it is he decides to do and will have our FULL support.”
It does not appear that this will be Lamar’s last time releasing music. However, it does appear that he will take on a more active role with his newest venture, pgLang, with Dave Free.
“Our community speaks music, film, television, art, books, and podcasts – because sometimes we have to use different languages to get the point of our stories across. Stories that speak to many nations, many races, and many ages,” the company’s mission statement reads.
Names like Baby Keem, Jorja Smith and Yara Shahidi have already been tied to the imprint. More will be revealed about the company in due time.
