Ole Miss landed the highest-ranked prospect in its program’s history Saturday afternoon after picking up a commitment from 4-star guard Matthew Murrell. Murrell is ranked 45th in the class of 2020 per the 247Sports Composite rankings. He chose Ole Miss over Auburn, Vanderbilt, Texas, and Florida.
Murrell hails from Memphis but plays his high school hoops at IMG Academy. Over the course of the AAU circuit, he played for Team Thad in the Under Armour Association. The 6-foot-4 guard is a scoring specialist who figures to have an instant impact in Oxford. Murrell averaged 15.6 PPG while shooting 41% from deep on about 4 attempts per game in the UAA circuit this year.
It was that scoring prowess displayed this year that bumped Murrell up the rankings and resulted in a group of quality offers. However, Ole Miss has been recruiting Murrell heavily for well over a year now.
Murrell is the first player to commit to Ole Miss in the class of 2020. Head coach Kermit Davis could not have asked for a better way to get the class started. Prior to Murrell, the highest-ranked prospect to take their talents to Oxford was Reginald Buckner in the class of 2009, who was ranked 54th. This could be a sign of the tides turning, as Kermit Davis is only beginning his second year at Ole Miss. In this time, Davis has already notched an SEC Coach of the Year Award and their highest rank commitment ever. Rebels fans will surely be hoping that the recruiting upswing continues.
