The 2015 NBA Draft is quickly approaching as there are only three days left until it is upon us. There are rumors flying across the association regarding the draft but none have to do with the #1 overall pick since it is now set in stone. The Minnesota Timberwolves have reportedly told Karl Anthony-Towns that he will be the first name taken off the draft board come Thursday. Following from Zagsblog’s Adam Zagoria:
The Minnesota Timberwolves have informed Karl-Anthony Towns that they will select him with the No. 1 pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, a source close to Towns told SNY.tv.
Obviously this isn’t earth shattering news since the 6’11” big man out of Kentucky has been projected to be the #1 pick for quite a while now. There were a few other candidates that had a legitimate case for why they should be the first name called on Thursday night, most notably Jahlil Okafor out of Duke and D’Angelo Russell out of Ohio State. Okafor had always been rumored to be in the mix but Russell came around later after he blew scouts out of the water in his pre draft workouts. However, purely based off a fit in today’s NBA and potential, Anthony-Towns will be the right pick to make for the twin cities. Towns provides rim protection, can run the break, is athletic, and has a decent offensive repertoire.
Karl Anthony-Towns in Minnesota may take a little bit of time to reach his ceiling. However, the Wolves truly are a perfect fit for Towns. They’ve already got an immense amount of young talent in guards Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine. On the other side of the spectrum they also have some veteran leadership in the forms of Kevin Martin, and more importantly, Kevin Garnett. KG would serve as the role model Towns needs right off the bat since they can relate on so many different levels. Being 6’11”, being the #1 overall pick, being drafted by Minnesota. They share many of the same qualities and he can really show Towns how to flourish in the small basketball market that is Minneosota. When we look back on this pick, it’s safe to say the Timberwolves will have ultimately made the right decision.
