The Minnesota Timberwolves have had a relatively quiet offseason, missing out on some key free agents while retaining their young tandem of Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. While not many alterations have been made to their roster, the Timberwolves did decide to shake things up in their front office recently.
According to a release from the team, the Wolves have hired Sachin Gupta as their Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.
The Minnesota Timberwolves today named Sachin Gupta as the team’s Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. Gupta spent the 2018-19 season with the Detroit Pistons as their Assistant General Manager.
As the release specified, Gupta was with the Detroit Pistons last year as the Assistant GM. Before that, Gupta was a special advisor for the Houston Rockets under Daryl Morey. Gupta worked alongside now Timberwolves President Gersson Rosas during his days with the Rockets and now the two will be reuniting in Minnesota.
“Sachin is an extremely talented basketball mind who brings a diverse and unique background to our staff,” said Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. “Known as a pioneer of basketball analytics and one of the leaders in the CBA, I’m thrilled to partner with Sachin as we aim to build the Timberwolves into one of the most modern and dynamic franchises in the NBA.”
Sachin Gupta walks into an interesting situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves. They possess one of the league’s best young big men but have failed to put requisite talent around him to turn them into a perennial playoff team. They did try the experiment with Jimmy Butler which ultimately went south for multiple reasons.
Hopefully, Gupta and Rosas can bring excitement back to a franchise desperate of something to look forward to. Even then, the West is absolutely loaded next season so it could be a while before the Wolves return to relevancy in the tougher conference.
